Case Studies - Aerospace - turbine blade inspection - UK and Far East requirement satisfied

In conjunction with one of our automation company partners, on this occasion PCE Ltd of Beccles, we created and installed on site in the UK and The Far East complete turnkey inspection units using multi-axis motion and machine vision for a demanding aeronautical inspection application. Our customer is a worldwide leader not only in the aerospace, defence and prestige automotive fields and of course demanded the highest levels of technology and performance to satisfy their application.

In this instance the component for inspection is the turbine blade for an aeronautical engine.

The problem.

The turbine blades are made from a series of components which are bonded together. The key element, the one which involved us, is the root bond line of the entire blade to the root component which connects it to the engine. Prior to our automated robotic machine vision inspection system the the root bond line was inspected by human eye using micro binoculars. The requirement was to create a consistent automated system which could provide reliable information upon which a human pass / fail judgement could be made.

The solution.

FS Systems designed a custom software package to customer specification, providing all the functionality required to interface to the motion system, acquire images, process images and interface to the customer manufacturing network

The system utilises a high precision 4 axis motion system to accurately control the scanning of the bond line using a line scan camera, telecentric lens and dark-field illumination. The bond line is scanned to a 0.005mm resolution.

Training

Training

As part of our programme of customer support we provide tailored training courses, which can be run in-house or on-site. This training is typically provided to small groups to ensure that attendees get the most out of our hands-on sessions.

Our provision covers two types of training: system specific training and general machine vision.

System specific training

We provide system specific training to cover all aspects of an installed vision system, including:

  • Operator level training, covering daily interaction and basic fault-finding
  • Maintenance training, covering details on areas such as cleaning procedures
  • Set-up level training for key personnel to create and edit tests, and understand what can and cannot be done with the system.

General machine vision training

We provide courses in the general principles and science behind machine vision, which are not specific to any equipment brand, as well as practical sessions, covering:

  • Lighting technology
  • Optics
  • Image processing techniques

Support

Support

Hardware support

We offer on-going support for all our products, from a single lens or light through to smart cameras and complex systems. And we offer extended warranties on key products where required.

Systems support

We understand the importance of ongoing support once we have installed your system, and based on the valued feedback we receive from our customers we have developed a comprehensive support package offering:

  • Hardware support, in and out of warranty
  • System set-up support
  • Trouble-shooting
  • New component configurations
  • System enhancements
  • On-going maintenance and support contracts

This support may take several forms, but where possible we are keen to provide remote access, via internet/ethernet or modem/dial-up, enabling us to respond quickly, efficiently and cost effectively.

Consultancy

Consultancy

Throughout our combined 35 years of experience in business, our expertise has been demanded in a consulting capacity time and time again. Consultation can form a vital first stage in the process of ensuring that the optimum solution is specified for your application.

Project and process assessment

We offer technical, commercial and practical advice on new and existing projects, including:

  • Assessing the viability of a potential machine vision project
  • Specification writing
  • Improving existing vision systems to achieve greater reliability, increased longevity and decreased scrap

Process enhancement

We encourage all our customers to exploit the information which can be obtained from our systems to improve their processes.

We offer packages to ensure that you get the most out of your system, including:

  • Statistical analysis
  • Increasing the relevance of the vision system's data output
  • Reports and graphs
  • Defect and process analysis
  • SPC software
  • Validation studies and trials
  • System self-checking or challenging the system with good and bad parts
  • Calibration checks

Some of these services would require one of our engineers to be on-site with the machine, but many can be done remotely with the appropriate remote access set-up. Contact us for more information.

Funded Consultancy

We are a commercial partner for European FP7 projects and are actively involved in advising institutes on the commercial viability of their research.

About Us

About Us

Founded in 2004 as FS Systems, and now Fisher Smith, we have over 35 combined years of experience of machine vision and industrial control systems. During that time we have built solid, long-term relationships with our customers and suppliers. Part of our success has been down to the emphasis we place on our service, and part down to an insistence on supplying only technically excellent, robust and reliable products. And we only partner with suppliers who share our approach to quality and reliability.

With our extensive knowledge of industrial systems we offer the right system for every application. We offer advice on interfacing and communicating with other automation to ensure our customers get the most from their machine vision system.

A crucial element of any vision system is lighting. LED lighting has become the standard for industrial vision systems, and we have developed a deep understanding of the technology. We maintain a comprehensive demonstration stock enabling us to specify the most appropriate lighting for each application.

Our knowledge and technical abilities has enabled us to develop two key software products, RoboVis® and GenVis. Written and developed in house with useability and flexibility in mind, both products have become mature and stable machine vision platforms.

We are continuously improving our business both internally and externally, with regular training for our key personnel and we are currently working towards ISO9001:2008 accreditation.

We have secured National and European funding in aerospace, transport, healthcare and biochemical sectors, and work with organisations such as MAS, MTA and PERA in a drive to continually improve our business. We are always enthusiastic about exploring new areas of business in partnership with our customers and their needs.
